4 Tips For Promoting A Healthy Back While Sleeping

Taking care of your spine is extremely important because it is the center of your nervous system. If you are not taking care of your back, you can end up experiencing severe back pain on a regular basis, as well as neck pain. This can make it difficult to do many things, such as exercise and more. There are many things you can do to improve your spinal and back health. Here are four tips for doing it even while you are sleeping:

  1. Sleep in the Proper Position: It is never a good idea to sleep on your stomach. This is because you are going to have to turn your neck to one side and that puts a great deal of strain on it. Instead, try to sleep on your side or back. If you sleep on your side, be sure that your knees are bent. It's also best to put a pillow in between your knees when you sleep on your side because this will help support your lower back instead of putting mild strain on it.
  2. Sleep on a Neck Support Pillow: If you sleep on your back, you may find it helpful to sleep on a neck support pillow. This will not only elevate your neck properly while you sleep, but it will prevent strain and ultimately make your nights much more comfortable. This is especially important if you experience neck pain already.
  3. Sleep on Only One Pillow: It is important to sleep with just one pillow. Sleeping on two pillows or more elevates your neck too high, which can cause it to be strained. If you feel the need to be elevated in order to breathe properly, then you can instead elevate the bed by placing something underneath the top legs of the bed frame.
  4. Get Out of Bed Properly: Believe it or not, there is a proper way you should be getting out of bed. This method of getting out of bed supports your back completely and ensures that you are more likely to wake up without any strain or with very minimal strain. To do this, you will want to turn to your side, push yourself up with one hand and then turn into a seated position. From here you can stand. It's also best to rise from a seated position because it keeps your back straight and supported.

By following these four tips for promoting a healthy back even while you sleep can ensure that you are more likely to wake up feeling rejuvenated with very little back pain. Contact a local chiropractor, like North Star Chiropractic Center, for more information.
